Who are you, and how would you describe yourself as a hiker?
I was born and raised in Piteå, with a great love for nature, especially the forest close to home. As a child, I spent a lot of time playing in the woods or accompanying my dad and grandfather on forestry work. I’ve always been intrigued by climbing mountains, but my interest in hiking developed during adulthood. Today, I’d describe myself as a “fast-slow” hiker; I like to walk at a brisk pace but also love taking long breaks to fully immerse myself in the nature around me.

What was your biggest challenge during the Gröna Bandet, and how did you handle it?
My biggest challenge during the Gröna Bandet was probably the weather on the day I hiked from Klimpfjäll to Raukaselet via Slipsiken. The wind was extremely strong, and rain lashed sideways across the mountains. I leaned heavily into the wind as I walked, and it was the first and only time during the hike that I felt at risk of getting hypothermic. My goal was to reach Slipsikstugan, a hut about nine kilometers from Klimpfjäll. When I finally got there, I was cold and soaked, but I was able to make a fire, warm up, dry off, and take a long lunch break while the storm raged outside. I had company from a few other hikers, and we talked about staying overnight. However, as the wind and rain began to subside, I decided to continue after some rest and made it safely off the mountain six kilometers from the hut.

Which part of the route was the most memorable, and why?
It’s incredibly hard to pick one specific section because I experienced and look back on the whole journey as a unified adventure. But if I had to choose, I’d say the first part of the Gröna Bandet, from Treriksröset to Abisko, was the most memorable. The weather was absolutely stunning, the scenery was breathtaking, and the infrastructure along that part of the Nordkalottleden was excellent. It was also great fun to share that section with my partner. Reaching Abisko was a significant milestone for me—it felt surreal that I had managed to hike there from the far north! That stretch set the tone for the journey and made continuing southward both possible and exciting.

How did you prepare physically and mentally for the hike?
I trained both cardio and strength during the winter and spring. The cross-country skiing season really helped improve my base fitness. I also went on a few shorter trips with my gear during spring to get used to carrying and handling it, as well as to evaluate if I wanted to make any changes before setting out. I also tried to walk more in my daily life instead of biking to places. Mentally, I thought a lot about how I’d handle being alone and deal with potential challenges along the way. These reflections were practically useful and also helped me show kindness to myself during the hike.

What gear was the most valuable for you, and what would you leave behind next time?
On chilly evenings, my Rab Xenon Jacket was incredibly valuable. Another standout item was my Kula Cloth—it worked perfectly and is a great tip for anyone peeing outdoors without needing to carry toilet paper. I also brought a CuloClean bidet, but I never ended up using it, so I’d leave that behind next time.

How did you manage food and water along the way?
I dried my own food for about half of the hike and shipped it to resupply points in Abisko, Ritsem, and Ammarnäs. For the rest of the hike, I bought food as I went, usually enough for three to five days at a time. This worked really well for me since I passed more small shops and stores the farther south I went. I drank water directly from streams between Treriksröset and Ammarnäs. South of Ammarnäs, I used a water filter, which I was very grateful to have on several occasions.

Were there moments when you considered quitting, and what made you keep going?
There wasn’t a single moment when I seriously considered quitting. However, my motivation wavered the day I left Hemavan heading south. I had just parted ways with two friends who had joined me from Ammarnäs to Hemavan, and those days had been so wonderful after hiking alone for a while. Saying goodbye was tough, and the weather forecast promised terrible conditions for the coming week. On top of that, I had a long day of road walking ahead of me. I started questioning what I was doing and why. What kept me going was primarily a sense of respect for myself and my dream of completing the Gröna Bandet.

How did this hike affect your view of nature and outdoor life?
My perspective on Sweden’s nature has broadened significantly after seeing the entire mountain range with my own eyes. It was fascinating to slowly experience how the high peaks of the north transitioned into the rolling open landscapes farther south. Returning to my regular life in a mid-sized city, with all its noise, light, and constant stimuli, was surprisingly challenging after having nature as my everyday environment for 55 days. Strangely, I feel more distant from nature now than I did before hiking the Gröna Bandet. Regarding outdoor life, the hike made me deeply grateful for the infrastructure, volunteers, and dedicated people who make Sweden’s rich outdoor culture possible.

What do you wish you had known before starting the Gröna Bandet that would have made the journey easier?
I wish I had known how long my daily hiking distances would be. That knowledge would have allowed me to relax a bit more at times since I actually had much more time than I initially thought to reach Grövelsjön.

How did the weather shape your experience, and how did you prepare for different conditions?
The weather influenced my experience every single day! Sunny days often felt lighter and more energizing. I would often take breaks and enjoy the surroundings, and everything seemed to go smoothly without much effort. Of course, sunny weather required extra care to avoid sunburn, so sunglasses, a cap, and SPF 50 sunscreen were my best friends. Rainy days required more mental grit and planning to get through but had their charm—for example, choosing to sleep indoors and warm up by a fire after a wet day. Before the hike, I prepared in several ways. I brought a wind jacket, rain jacket, rain pants, and waterproof socks. My sleeping bag and a change of clothes were stored in a sturdier waterproof bag, along with my electronics. The rest of my gear was packed in other dry bags, and I used a liner bag inside my backpack instead of a rain cover. During the hike, I consumed weather reports like never before!

Comfort and Fit

I am largely positive to this pack, as it’s very comfortable, even on longer journeys. However, we have had some users complain about how the frame sticks up way past their heads, which is often a problem for shorter people.

Weather Resistance

The Lundhags Padje Light 60L is pretty solid when it comes to keeping your stuff dry. They’ve used recycled polyester and gave it a water-repellent coating. Plus, there’s this PU layer that adds extra protection. So basically, your gear should stay dry in a light shower or even a moderate rain.

That said, it’s not totally waterproof. If you’re caught in a downpour, you might want to throw on a rain cover or use a waterproof liner inside.

Cons of the Lundhags Padje Light 60L

  • Limited external access: While those stretchy front and side pockets are great for quick-grab items, getting to stuff in the main compartment can be a bit of a pain. There’s only the roll-top to work with. And this can make it inconvenient to retrieve items stored deep in the pack, especially when you’re on the move.
  • Not ideal for heavy loads: This pack is not built for carrying extremely heavy loads. So, if you’re planning a long trek with lots of gear or bringing along heavy stuff like serious camera equipment, you might find its structure insufficient for support. I would say the limit is around 15 kilos. However, we have had a few long-distance hikers say they have gone up to 20kilos without major issues.
  • No Hipbelt pockets: I think for a concrete complaint, this would be it for me. I love hipbelt pockets and this pack doesn’t have them. I use the Skalmo hipbelt pocket which works great on this pack!

Ultralight and comfortable: A no bullsh*t guide to ultralight hiking – Updated for 2024

I finally found the original manuscript of the book I wrote in 2015 and released it on Amazon. My original goal was to do yearly book updates, but I found it wasn’t really necessary. So I never did; with that, the manuscript got lost in the endless depths of my hard drive. Well, I did the unimaginable and searched in my Google Docs for it, and voila, here we are.

After finding the manuscript, I reviewed the original Amazon reviews. There were very few complaints about the book, but the complaints that did come were about grammar and spelling; a few people thought it needed more vinegar. In any case, I updated the book with a few more chapters, rewrote big portions of the book for clarity, and even took Ultralight Hiking into the future with the use of an AI assistant bot; that really doesn’t help at all.

HMG Unbound review

HMG Unbound review

On first look the unbound looks like every other UL pack released in the last couple of years. And in some ways it is a copy of smaller cottage bag forms. A way for HMG to stay relevant in a fast changing market. HMG have always made great, robust, ultralight backpacks. I bought my first HMG pack in 2010 – The Windrider 4400 70L white backpack. The Windrider has been the standard for over a decade and often copied design. Today however, the Windrider feels its age. It’s a great pack, and my first Windrider is still the backpack I use the most. I would also say that the Windrider or similar packs like the Southwest, junction and porter are still the packs I recommend most. Their versatility for different uses, their robustness, comfort and useability just makes them damn good multipurpose backpacks that most people will never regret. With that said, The overall market has clearly been trending towards smaller, lighter “long distance” ultralight packs.

Standard features of the new breed: Bottom pocket, large front pocket, large side pockets, with/without hipbelt and frame, and shoulder strap pockets (which the unbound doesn’t have). In other words, the minimalistic designs of the early UL movement have been getting replaced and outdone by highly technical, complex bags with one specific goal: To make it through a long hike with minimal fuss and maximal comfort. Classic minimal, multifunction packs that would last a lifetime, i e the Windrider, just weren’t the sexy new kid on the block anymore. They look and feel their age. A near 20 year design with minimal updates. I think the current Hyperlite mountain gear Windrider could be summed up as Version 1.5. 

Older, OG UL Hikers use and still love the classic multipurpose design of the Windriders. But the new hipster class hikers, the ones giving themselves trail names, (For reference mine is “Just Ken”) using pronouns in their bios,  and bringing more electronics than a Best buy, needed something more. they needed sexy! This is where the unbound comes in. Sexy as hell, lots of pockets and do dads, even the new standard bottom pocket. Hyperlite didn’t just copy UL packs from the smaller, sexier, new brands, they made the new segment their own. The unbound is so good, that it looks like all the packs the Unbound is inspired by, are in fact the inspired. The unbound is simply put, one of the best designed UL long distance packs on the market. 

Light, at just 879g for white 55L or 975g for black, it’s not the lightest 55 Liter pack, but it certainly compares nicely in the segment. And like all Hyperlite mountain gear backpacks, the extra weight is worth it in the form of robustness and comfort. Unlike most other packs, the unbound sews its webbing on the outside of the pack, which allows for all the extra pockets, features and doodads, while still allowing for the bag to be taped and sealed. (Most backpacks use a flat felled seam) The outside webbing also allows for a simple daisy chain to be sewn into the seam itself. Simple, effective. The large front pocket is divided into two sections, a large main pocket, and a smaller “Kangaroo” pocket. Again, simple and effective. The bottom pocket does what it’s supposed to and for me atleast: it’s the comfort of the Unbound that separates it from the rest of the packs in this genre. This pack feels great, even with heavier loads.

Compared to something like the Zpacks Arc-blast – which to me has always been the standard – pen-ultimate ultralight 55L backpack. I would say the Unbound looks better IMO, and with heavier loads a more comfortable backpack. But I would give overall comfort for lighter loads to the Arc-blast as well as better back ventilation. Though the arc-blast starts to break down with heavier, or awkward loads as the frame doesn’t do much. There are of course a multitude of lightweight backpacks that I can compare the Unbound to, but I will keep this review simple and the comparison to the Arc-blast as the arc-blast is a well known, very light 55 Liter pack that most people will know how they look and feel at this point.

Back to the Unbound, Sweaty back syndrome is still a thing with this pack, but let’s be honest, if you’re calling yourself “elf on the trail” with Zeek, Zerk pronouns, sweaty back is the least of your problems. With that said, sweaty backs is like condensation in a tent. It’s there, no matter what you do, it can’t be avoided but can be mitigated. The Unbound through and through looks and feels like an HMG pack. The quality is sharp, the design near perfect. function and use superb. It’s everything you want in a 55 liter long distance backpack, with nothing you don’t. So it’s not made in a little basement in Maine. It’s Not made in China either. And judging by how massive certain brands have become in the UL market, brands that very specifically make their original or copied designs in Asia. It’s obvious the market could care less where the products are made, for reference, HMG built factories in Mexico, where the unbound is produced.

Biggest complaints about the Unbound? No shoulder strap pockets and I think the hip-belt pockets are a bit on the small side. Granted, a lot of the Unbounds competitors don’t bother with hip-belt pockets, but still, they could be bigger. Also, as it’s a pack designed for a very specific purpose, it’s not a pack that I would personally have as my goto pack. I need a bigger pack that has a bit more flexibility in it’s useage. Hence, why the 70L Windrider is my preferred one pack to rule them all.

Hyperlite mountain gear is a company known for making robust, if not basic lightweight equipment. But premium in its use and functionality. There is nothing basic about the unbound packs. They are high quality, modern ultralight backpacks with a very specific market in mind: The gear nerd who likes to walk long distances with weekly resupplies, live in a tent for six months and call themselves “Trail fart!

Jemtlander Pullpac 8L – The incredible pulk

The Jemtlander PullPac is an ultralight pulka for those who normally carry a pack on their back and who also want to be able to pull their rucksack (or bag) behind them when the conditions are suitable. The design of the chassis is adapted to normal-width backpacks in the 60-90 liter range that do not have overly wide side pockets. In steep and/or difficult terrain, it is a great advantage to be able to take the rucksack including the sled on the back.

A complete Jemtlander Pullpac 8L consists of a sled chassis with 3 pack straps, a pull belt and a complete pull line with carabiners and built-in suspension. (NOTE! Backpack or bag not included in Pullpac!)

External dimensions: Pullpac 8L is 77 cm long and approx. 45 cm wide at the bow. The width is more flexible along the sides, up to approx. 60 cm, and adapts to the width of the pack. Fits pack volumes of approx. 60-90 litres

Our thoughts:

Jörgen Johansson, wrote many years ago about a lightweight Pulka he made for an ultralight trek through Sarek nation park, he called that converted pulka “the Ultimate Rulk”. Great story of his trek and how he used the pulk. Basically long 5000 word story condensed to a few lines here: He sawed off the back of a traditional orange pulk and strapped it to his backpack so that he could alternate from having the backpack on which is needed through certain areas where there is no trail. To being able to pull it on his pulk without having to change any configuration on the sled itself. So ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the new, improved and excellent “incredible Rulk”. 

What can I say about this Pulk? It is the perfect winter UL pulk. As the Incredible rulk, you strap this onto your pack and you then can use your pulk as both a sled and protection on your pack in backpack mode. Everything you need is included, no trying to pussle together anything to get the Pullpak to work. I’ve tried it on multiple packs without issue. From a simple 55 liter UL backpack to a 100L Ymer from Klättermusen. It’s perfection in it’s simplicity.

Weight:

In totalt with everything you need: 1,20 kilos

So light I could almost see myself trying this on a summer hike when I need more gear with me. Might be worth trying to pull it behind me on open mountain ranges in the summer. Not saying it would work, but I am certainly curious.

Included: 

Sled that form to just about any backpack for a nice tight fit. All the straps needed to form it and strap it to your pack and all the ropes and hipbelt needed to pull it behind you. 

Conclusion:

There are a lot of sleds out there for winter hiking, but most of them all have the same negatives: They become a real pain in the ass when there is no trail. Heavy, cumbersome and large, a traditional winter backpacking sled can be downright dangerous when their is no trail. This is where the PullPac comes into play – at just 800 grams for the led itself, it allows for quick conversion from sled to backpack in those un-taimed trails. Obviously there are a few drawbacks to having such a pulk solution, but the main one being that because you are limited to the size of your pack, and UL kit is needed for best results. With a traditional sled you can pack everything including all the additional comforts you might want with you. However, with that said, you can fit a 100 liter pack on this thing, so, not sure how much of a limiting factor that is. 

All in all, I really like the PullPak, and will be a Pulk that I use for all my winter hikes where I won’t be on a trail. Where there is a trail, than I think my massive pulk with dogs and/or snowmobile pulling is a better solution. Jokes aside, the Pullpak is a fantastic addition to the UL hikers kit and you won’t be dissapointed. 

Plus:

  • Functional design and use
  • Everything needed is included
  • Easy to use and master
  • Fits most backpacks

Minus:

  • Not fun going downhill. No stabilizer means the Pullpac eats your heels. So best practice to use as backpack going downhill
  • Limited size – so no bringing the kitchen sink

About a month ago, @backpackinglight.se posted a message seeking a female test pilot to evaluate Altras @altrarunning new Olympus Hike Mid GTX for women.

I usually never express interest through similar posts because I always approach them with the wonderfully positive attitude that “they will choose someone else anyway” or “I never win anything anyway.” But then a DM from @backpackinglight.se arrived, and my initial feeling was overwhelming joy. Then, it turned into “damn it, they will never work for my knee” (for those who don’t know, I have dislocated my right knee numerous times and had even more surgeries). I had convinced myself that the only thing that works for my knee, when it comes to hiking with a backpack, is heavy boots like my Meindl Island.

But I was wrong. Altras Olympus Hike Mid GTX is simply incredibly comfortable, whether I hike without a backpack or with one (a ten-mile hike with a 20 kg backpack was no problem). They are really stable with excellent grip despite their low weight, and it feels like walking in a pair of sneakers with cloud-like cushioning rather than boots. This is probably due to the Vibram sole design and the comfortably wide toe box.

Altras Olympus Hike Mid GTX is simply incredibly comfortable, whether I hike without a backpack or with one (a ten-mile hike with a 20 kg backpack was no problem). They are really stable with excellent grip despite their low weight, and it feels like walking in a pair of sneakers with cloud-like cushioning rather than boots. This is probably due to the Vibram sole design and the comfortably wide toe box.

I have hiked over 50 km in my Olympus since I received them, and they have performed exceptionally well on any surface. During my trip to the Ovik Mountains with my sister, we walked through soaking wet bogs, and I can confirm that the boots are waterproof since my feet (unlike my sister’s 🥲😂) remained dry throughout the hike.

They don’t replace my Meindls because I prefer higher shafts for extremely wet hikes like the one in the Ovik Mountains (as I mentioned, they kept me dry, but I wouldn’t have needed to worry about where I stepped if I had worn my Meindls), and I still find a sense of (probably unfounded) security in the stiffness of my Meindls. However, my Olympus will be my go-to footwear for the majority of my trips; I love them. And I wear them casually too—fashion is not my thing.

Mina förberedelser inför Pacific Crest Trail- Vi träffar David Stillman

När kylan får klockorna att stanna, när solens strålar inte längre når upp över talltopparna. Tidpunkten på året då hundratals traktorförare varje morgon går upp för att hålla Norrlands tusentals mil vägar körbara. Vi pratar om Januari 2022, och livet liksom längtar efter ljuspunkter. Ken har redan gjort något åt saken och tagit första bästa flyg till Gran Canaria för att vandra, medan jag sitter ensam på Backpackinglights kundtjänst och drömmer om kommande äventyr efter att ha intervjuat Peter Bergström. Peter hade sommaren -21 vandrat Gröna bandet fram och tillbaka, en sk. Jojo vandring. Jojo, tänker jag, det skulle man ha gjort, när telefonen plötsligt ringer…

Pacific Crest Trail

En man som presenterar sig som David Stillman ringer och berättar att han skulle behöva hjälp med utrustning. Pacific Crest Trail väntade och jag fick uppdrag att optimera hans utrustning inför den kommande vandringen. Precis vad jag behövde!

Pacific Crest trail (PCT) är en 426 mil lång vandringsled som löper mellan Mexikanska gränsen i söder, till Canada i norr. genom öken, bergskedjor, strömmande älvar, höga höjder, snö, is och allt däremellan. David vandrade en del av PCT nu i somras och jag fick nu under hösten möjligheten att ställa några frågor om äventyret.

Hur förbereder man sig för PCT?

-Det finns gånger man kan chansa lite och det skulle fungera ändå, men att förbereda sig för en långvandring i vildmarken är inte en sådan gång, säger David och fortsätter. Just Pacific Crest Trail eller ”PCT” som den kort heter, är en extra lång långvandring, vilket gör den än mindre lämplig för chansningar. Här är man ”on Your own, säger David.

-Vid något tillfälle tänkte jag att det kan väl inte krävas så mycket annan utrustning än den jag redan har d.v.s. en klassisk svensk setup med Lundhagskängor och Fjällräven ryggsäck men efter en del research så landar man ändå i att försöka minimera vikten när det blir långt. Det blir i slutändan likväl än avvägning av hög komfort i själva vandringen dvs låg vikt eller hög komfort i nattlägret dvs hög vikt och det är väldigt individuellt vart den gränsen går. 

Efter en del avvägningar med arbetsgivare och familj blev startdatumet den 13:e juni. -Vid den tidpunkten startar man inte vid mexikanska gränsen, det blir helt enkelt för varmt för en blek nordbo som jag, tillägger David. -Jag valde därför att starta i Walkers pass, dvs i höjd med Ridgecrest.

-Tidpunkten gav mig dessbättre lite mer tid för att finslipa på planering och inköp av utrustning samt komma i bra form. Här var gänget på Backpackinglight.se i Umeå till stor hjälp. Vi bollade olika alternativ och landade i ett par avgörande vitala utrustningar som fungerade bra.

Berätta om din utrustning, vilka prylar var du mer eller mindre nöjd med?

-Valet på ryggsäck blev en Gossamer 60L. När jag fick hem den såg den väldigt liten ut och det såg helt omöjligt ut att få ner dom saker som jag hade på listan men dom väl tilltagna meshfickorna gjorde ett bra jobb och efter ett tag får man in en bra packningsrutin. T.o.m. den stora björnburken som var obligatorisk i norra Kalifornien gick att få in under locket…men det var tajt.

Ett annat bra val var vandringsskorna, för kängor går bort, menar David. – De är för tunga och torkar väldigt långsamt efter ett vad. -Så det är s.k. trail runners som gäller. Mitt val föll på Altra’s Lone Peak. För oss med bred tåbas är de helt underbara.  Gott om utrymme att vicka på tårna och skönt när man går i branta nedförsbackar. Otroligt lätta dessutom. En nackdel om man väger över snittet kan vara att man kan ”gå igenom” när man går på kantiga, spetsiga stenpartier.

-Med en ny rygga och nya skor så kunde den viktiga förberedelsen på allvar starta. Vid varje tillfälle åkte rygga och skor med och på helgerna så var det alltid ett längre pass inplanerat. Först med nätta 6–7 kg i ryggan och senare i schemat med ca 15 kg. Det kan faktiskt vara svårt att hitta tunga små saker som går ner i en ryggsäck så man tar vad man har. I mitt fall kom diverse utrustning från garaget väl tillhanda såsom skruvdragare, batterier och tänger.

David fortsätter: -Mitt Triangia kök var heller aldrig aktuellt och istället blev det en investering i en Soto Windmaster med inbyggd tändare samt en titanpanna Toaks 900 ml. Fungerade fantastiskt bra!

-En sak som skiljer sig från en svenska vandring är vattenkvaliteten och vattentillgången så möjlighet att filtrera vattnet är ett måste. Ha med dig ett vattenfilter. Sawyer squeeze gjorde jobbet för mig.

Istället för att bära på vatten så tog David med sig en Cnoc Vattenbehållare samt vattenfilter.

En av de tyngre investeringarna rent ekonomiskt som David gjorde var ett nytt tält. -Zpacks har genomgående väl genomtänkta, lätta och stryktålig utrustning att erbjuda. Själva tältvalet gick till Altaplex. Nu snackar vi om ett tält under ett halvt kilo!  Det är ett en persons tält men man får in mycket av utrustningen om man är normalstor. Det kändes aldrig klaustrofobiskt, tillägger David.

På listan av inköp som David ångrar finns Zpacks belt pouch och wallet: – Jag hade front pouch’en i midjebältet men det satt aldrig riktigt bra och jag var nära att glömma den flera gånger efter raster.

-En annan detalj som aldrig kom till användning, var gaiters. Visst kom det in nått gruskorn nu och då men det funkade bra utan och funkar det utan, så finns det helt enkelt ingen anledning att släpa på dom. 

-I öknen så varierar temperaturerna kraftigt mellan dag och natt. Det är även blåsigt många dagar och då är en liten smidig regnjacka en bra detalj även fast risken för regn i princip är minimal i den här delen av PCT. OMM’s Halo Smock är ultralätt och kom väl till användning.

-När väl äventyret startade kände jag mig trygg med min utrustning och fysik men det är också lite beroende hur man är lagd när det gäller förberedelser och tillgänglig budget. Visst skulle man rent teoretiskt kunna gå med skandinavisk uppsättning men det är något jag inte skulle rekommendera. Men faktum är att det skulle vara väldigt kreddigt och det skulle dra till sig en mängd frågor och intresse.

-Väl ute i vildmarken är det mycket det mentala och inställning som avgör ändå, förutom förberedelserna. Under en längre vandring så kommer det dippar, så är det. I mitt fall slog höjdsjukan till. Först lite diskret men sen mer allvarligt och i dessa miljöer är det en sån typ av chansning man inte vill laborera med för mycket. Efter inrådan från läkare så hoppade jag av vid Toloume Meadows. Det dog en ung holländska i maj förra året under sin PCT vandring, just pga höjdsjuka och jag ville inte hamna i en situation där jag tog dumma beslut och äventyrade min hälsa ännu mer.

-I slutändan blev det ett fantastiskt äventyr med massor av nya intryck. Det är ett härligt gäng där ute och tillsammans med de underbara vyerna så är det helt oslagbart häftigt.

Utrustning- och Ruttplanering för Gröna bandet. Vi träffar Jonas, Katta och hunden Bysen.

Att jag älskar att skriva om vandringsäventyr har nog inte förbigått någon. Varje skildrad vandringsresa ger mig nya infallsvinklar, erfarenheter och kunskaper. Och när man får en mapp full med bilder och godbitar så känner man sig som ett barn på julafton. Första gången jag hörde om Jonas och Kattas planerade äventyr var under våren 2022 när paret kontaktade oss på Backpackinglight.se. Gröna bandet väntade och vi fick äran att hjälpa till med att förse paret med utrustning. Det här är deras vandringsberättelse som avhandlar alltifrån vägval, planering, missöden, utrustning och som avslutas i en Jaguar från Karesuando…

Jonas och Katarina Kullenhausen bor med sin 2,5-åriga schäferblandning Bysen i Närke. Tidigare har de bott i såväl Stockholm, Köpenhamn och Malmö men deras kärlek för naturen har fått paret att flytta ut på landet. -Naturintresset har alltid funnits nära, säger Jonas men tillägger att de aldrig gjort några längre vandringar tillsammans, innan deras Gröna bandet tur.

Vägval och planering

På Vitagröna bandets hemsida kan man följa samtliga vandrares vandringsvägar. Jonas och Kattas vägval styrdes till viss del av att de hade med sig sin kära och fyrbenta familjemedlem Bysen. Jonas förklarar:

-Eftersom det krävs en avmaskning av hunden innan man går in i Norge var det inte aktuellt för oss att passera in i Norge förrän efter Abisko och eftersom det inte är tillåtet med hund i vissa nationalparker såsom Padjelanta och Sarek var det givet att vandra längs Kungsleden. Sen ville vi också väldigt gärna uppleva Kungsleden då vi inte vandrat den tidigare, något vi var väldigt glada för att vi gjorde då omgivningarna runt leden var otroligt vackra. Eftersom Lapplandsleden invigdes förra året så bestämde vi oss för att testa den. Utöver detta så ville vi i stort undvika asfalt så mycket som vi kunde för att det sliter, kanske framförallt på hundtassar. Vi tog hjälp av tidigare bandare och studerade deras vägval samt satt ganska många timmar med Lantmäteriets karttjänst “Min Karta” samt appen; Fjällkartan. Även traditionella papperskartor var också till stor hjälp. Då vi startade tidigt på säsongen och därmed misstänkte höga flöden samt att vi inte vadat med hunden tidigare så bestämde vi oss för att gå över Gåsen istället för det ganska berömda vadet i Härjångsån innan Vålådalen.

Trions vandring från Grövelsjön till röset uppgick till 1284 km och tog 59 dagar att genomföra. De hade i sin planering tagit höjd för ca 75 dagar då de inte ville stressa och kunna ta oplanerade vilodagar om behovet skulle dyka upp.

Depåer och vilodagar

-Vi hade planerat in depåer med tillhörande vilodag ungefär var 7-10 dag, förklarar Jonas. Anledningen att vi skickade en hel del var främst för att hunden har lite kinkig mage och vi ville inte experimentera med foder utan köra på det som funkade hemma men som inte finns på så många ställen. Och eftersom vi då ändå skulle skicka en låda så passade vi på att skicka till oss själva, bl. a frystorkad frukost som vi köpt ett stort parti av, gas, snacks, hygienartiklar m.m.

När olyckan är framme

-Vårt största missöde skedde första veckan på vandringen. I Rogens blockstensterräng halkade Bysen och slog av en tand och därför var vi tvungna att ta oss till en veterinär och vi visste inte hur illa det var, om han skulle kunna äta mat eller bli svag och behöva bäras. Det var onsdag eftermiddag, vi skulle strax slå läger för dagen och närmsta veterinär som låg i Hede hade inte öppet på helgen. Därför började en kapplöpning mot klockan för att hinna dit innan helgen där vi gick sträckan vi planerat för 3 dagar på 2 dagar. Första dagen fortsatte vi att gå till 01 på natten och slog läger i regn, ganska hård vind och mörker. Morgonen efter gick vi rejält slitna upp tidigt och fortsatte gå. Efterhand började Katta få väldigt ont i knäna och de sista 8 timmarna haltade vi långsamt nedför en plaskblöt bergssida i trailskor med vatten upp till anklarna. Vid 22 kröp vi rejält mörbultade och slutkörda in på campingen i Fjällnäs och var ganska övertygade om att vi skulle behöva bryta, antingen pga. Bysen eller pga. Kattas knän som var svullna som två ballonger. Men dagen efter skjutsade Winnifred oss till veterinären som gav oss positivt besked att vi kunde fortsätta och efter två dagars sängliggande kunde Katta gå igen, även om det fortfarande gjorde ont.

Utrustning

Jonas fortsätter redogöra för deras utrustning: -Gröna bandet blev starten för oss när det kommer till att få ner vikten på vår utrustning, tidigare har vi inte fokuserat särskilt mycket på det alls. Men i och med att vi gick med i olika grupper för långvandrare och har vänner som snöat in mycket på det blev det naturligt för oss att tänka på det då vi behövde byta ut en hel del gammal utrustning och införskaffa mycket nytt.

-När det kommer till tält hade vi innan vandringen ett Marmot Vapor 2P som vi tyckte mycket om men eftersom vi skaffat en hund på 35 kg hund så behövde vi ett större tält. Vi velade mycket mellan fristående lättviktstält från Big Agnes och mer klassiska tunneltält från Hilleberg eller Nordisk då vi var lite oroliga för hur BA skulle klara sig i fjällväder men samtidigt ville vi ha ett lätt tält som inte bara skulle användas i fjällen. Efter mycket diskussioner och massvis med bra hjälp och stöd från Kiwi på Backpackinglight.se landade vi i ett BA Copper Spur 3 Platinum då vi inte vågade ha hunden i förtältet och därmed behövde mer golvyta inne i tältet. Vi har varit väldigt nöjda med tältet som är otroligt rymligt inuti, någon skrev i sin recension att det är som ett palats och det kan vi skriva under på. Tältet klarade nästan alla väderförhållanden galant, vi fick byta tältplats vid ett tillfälle när det blåste hårda byar uppe i ett pass vid norska gränsen för då blev sidan för intryckt och vi vågade inte chansa på att tältet skulle fixa det.

-Ett minus enligt oss är packpåsen till tältet som består av tunn DCF och som vi bytte ut då tältet satt utanpå Jonas ryggsäck och påsen väldigt lätt fick revor, men det är ju en smaksak. Sen är det ett väldigt välventilerat tält i och med att ytterduken inte går hela vägen ner och innertältet i princip bara är mesh. Det innebär såklart att det blir drag i tältet, något som är skönt när det är varmt men som kan vara kyligt under kalla nätter.

Jonas fortsätter: -Sovsäckar behövde vi båda införskaffa eftersom vi bara hade säckar med komfort på strax över 0 grader innan och då vi började redan sista maj så hade vi kalla nätter med minusgrader i början. Vi är väldigt mycket för second hand då det är bra för miljön och det finns en jättebra marknad för friluftsprylar så köpte vi varsin begagnad dunsovsäck. Jag köpte en Sea To Summit Spark SPIII och katta en Marmot Sawtooth. Vi är båda nöjda med våra säckar förutom att de såklart blev för varma när temperaturen var som varmast, det är svårt att komma ifrån när man är ute mellan maj och augusti och temperaturen går från minusgrader till +30. Men det funkade bra att öppna upp dem helt eller bara använda liner när det blev för varmt.

-Jonas behövde även köpa en ny luftmadrass då hans tidigare fick sätta livet till första gången vi var ute och övernattade med hunden och inte börjat med tossor, tillägger Katta. -Valet föll på en STS Etherlight XT Insulated för att den lät så bekväm i beskrivningen. Och det var ingen lögn, medger Jonas. -Den är otroligt skön att sova på och pumpsäcken är den effektivaste vi testat. Tyvärr fick den en liten punktering mot slutet som jag inte lyckades hitta så sista tiden blev ryggen lite krokig. Katta började med sitt Nemo Astro Air men frös en hel del i början och efter en del klurande landade vi i att det måste bero på isoleringen underifrån så i Hemavan köpte hon ett Thermarest NeoAir Xlite. Det var lösningen på isoleringen för hon slutade direkt frysa, däremot trivdes hon inte så bra med det då hon tyckte det var för litet och lätt att glida av.

Kattas ryggsäck: Osprey Ariel Pro

Jonas fortsätter: – Vi köpte varsin ny ryggsäck då Katta endast hade en dagstursryggsäck sen tidigare och jag hade en gammal Fjällräven Kajka som började ge upp. Valet föll på Osprey Aether PRO på 70 liter respektive Osprey Ariel PRO på 65 liter, fantastisk bra ryggsäckar, lätta och modulära med otrolig komfort även när man lastar dem. Jonas packning låg ofta strax under 25 kg men ryggsäcken höll formen väldigt fint och var bekväm ändå. Det var flera vi mötte som frågade hur vi kunde klara oss med så små väskor och knappt trodde på oss när vi berättade vilken volym de hade eftersom de är väldigt slimmade och smidiga. Nästa gång ska vi testa att skippa fickorna på avbärarbältet helt och eventuellt sätta en flaskhållare på en axelrem. Att man så lätt kan ta av både topplock samt sidofickor och spänna åt ryggsäcken gör den väldigt mångsidig då man kan justera volymen efter tillfället. Katta som hatar topplock tog bort sitt medan jag lät mitt sitta kvar, tillägger Jonas.

-Bysen hade en Non-Stop Amundsen klövjeväska. Den var lite knepig att ställa in i början tyckte vi, men med övning kommer färdighet. Vi skickade dock hem hans väska för under värmeböljan som kom efter midsommar tog värmen hårt på honom och vi ville inte pressa honom för hårt, menar Jonas.

Andra utrustningsdetaljer vi var väldigt nöjda med var Järvenduken vi köpte till Bysen, vår UCO mini lantern som är en tältlykta för ett värmeljus som driver ut lite fukt och bidrar till väldigt mycket stämning, vår Soto Windmaster-brännare och strumporna från Darn Tough. Katta var också väldigt nöjd med att hon tog med en liten slickepott som man dels kunde äta med men dels rengöra kärlet med så att det knappt behövde diskas.

Minnen från turen
-Godbitar finns massor, starka naturupplevelser och djurmöten, fortsätter Katta, som t.ex när en örn gled ljudlöst strax över våra huvuden och bedömde om Bysen var ett bra byte eller när Jonas såg en fjällräv raska förbi tältet. Att träffa andra bandare var också en höjdare eftersom det direkt blir en gemenskap. Det var en ganska konstig känsla att vandra helt ensamma genom ödemarken fram till Treriksröset bara för att mötas av ett arbetslag från Lantmäteriet som målade om klumpen och drack kaffe. Sen var det en lite märklig upplevelse när vi bokat en taxi från Karesuando till Kiruna efter vandringen. Utanför Ica vinkar en gammal man på oss och förklarar att det var bilbrist så de hade fått låna in en bil medan han leder oss till en guldfärgad Jaguar där vi får trycka in packning, 35 kg hund och två smutsiga vandrare i friluftskläder.

Lärdomar
Innan vi avslutar ber jag Jonas och Katta samla några lärdomar och rekommendationer till framtida bandare:

-Skicka inte för mycket. Om man inte som i vårt fall behöver skicka hundmat eller har väldigt specifika preferenser behöver man knappt skicka något. Det mesta finns på vägen och det känns bättre att stötta de små butiker som finns längs vägen. Vi trodde till exempel att gas skulle vara lite svårt att få tag på eftersom vi gick innan stugor och fjällstationer hade öppnat för säsongen men det fanns i varenda liten butik och kvarlämnat på campingar.

-Gå inte ut för hårt. Vi hade planerat en försiktig start och en ganska långsam upptrappning. Det var vi väldigt glada för. Man märker så otroligt tydligt att man blir starkare och segare för varje vecka som går och successivt känns distanser som i början var jobbiga knappt i kroppen. Men det sliter i början, både på människor och hund. Även om man är van vid att träna mycket är de flesta inte vana vid att gå så många timmar per dag utan längre återhämtning emellan.

-Ha rätt förväntningar. Det kommer inte vara magiskt och härligt precis hela tiden. Vi tyckte t.ex att sträckan vid Åre och upp mot Gäddede var riktigt tråkig periodvis då vi gick på vägar och började ifrågasätta varför vi gick. På det stora hela är det en helt fantastisk vandring men det är okej att känna att det inte är kul varje dag, det är lätt att få den bilden ibland och då få dåligt samvete.

-Ta hjälp av gamla bandare. Vi hade så otroligt mycket hjälp av att läsa inlägg och bloggar från tidigare bandare i vår planering. Framförallt Katrin och Elva med kontot make.memories.together, Svante Sundelin och Lina Hallenbratt. Många är väldigt engagerade och hjälpsamma i facebookgruppen och det är sällan man behöver uppfinna några hjul på nytt. Oavsett hur liten obskyr stig eller myr man än funderar över är det alltid någon som har gått där och kan ge värdefull input. Vi är så tacksamma för den hjälp vi fick och har valt att utforma vårt instagramkonto, som heter Kullenbandet, så att det ska kunna användas som planeringsverktyg för framtida bandare med mycket information kring vägval, depåer, boenden med hund, packlistor osv.
