Gallery: Southern Kingstrail part 1 2015

I started writing a trip report about this trail here, but I wanted to make just a simple post with the pictures together in a gallery. I will also be adding video over on my youtube channel as well. This is part one of the 2 part series

I had my Fujifilm x-t1 and 18mm lens as well as the samyang 12mm prime lens. I felt both lenses where excellent and you can see from the pictures below that the quality of and depth of pictures taken on the x-t1 is hard to beat. This trip was taken in late september so it’s very wet and very autumn ish.  Read More

Gear review: Exped Thunder 70L backpack

I have been looking for a good winter backpack, or heavy load backpack for a while now. My heart has been set on the what I assume is excellent Hyperlite mountain gear porter 4400 packs – but I just couldn’t justify the price. (cost plus import to Sweden would push the pack to around $500) Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind paying for a good product, but as I won’t be using such a large pack year round, the cost couldn’t be justified.

After looking around a bit I ran across the Exped thunder 70L backpack, which here in Sweden at the moment is around $200, so I thought I would give it a shot. The pack is 70Liters with an adjustable frame that fits even my large torso (not always the easiest task to find). On top of that I have a lot of respect for the designers over at Exped as I feel that over the last couple of years they have really been making some ground breaking products… Just not ultralight. Ultralight photography or Photography backpacking…

I had a bitch of a time coming up with a name for this.. as the photography itself is not ultralight, just the camera and backpacking gear. Anyway, I think you get the point. Photography is certainly a subject that I am no expert on and something that is always evolving. I have tried everything from oldschool analog cameras such as the Hasselblad X-pan panorama camera, Leica M3, M6, as well as sony’s A7r, iphones, compact cameras and now my personal favourite for the outdoors is the FujiFilm X-T1. A lot of my photography you can find on this site. Read More

Daily pic: metal thingy

Not the most inspiring title in the world, but kind of works 🙂 When I was back home in Herlong, California back in 2013 me and my parents took the UTV out (bigger ATV) onto Honey lake. We cruised around for a good several hours and as the sun was setting over the Sierra Nevada mountain range we stumbled upon this enormous metal thingy lying there on the dried out lake bed. It was fairly surreal just how large this was, the picture doesn’t really do it any justice in that manner. I used a 12mm lens on my full frame sony A7R and had the camera very close on a tripod. This is a series of three exposures – HDR in other words.

Trip report

Trip report: Southern kingstrail, Sweden part 1

How do I describe a trip like the Southern kings trail? I have been thinking about this now for over two weeks since I’ve been back and one term keeps coming back to me “magnificent shithole”.  I know it’s not very descriptive, but it is literally the only phrase I could think of. Southern kings trail this time of the year in late September was by far one of the most challenging trails I have ever hiked. In fact I honestly can’t remember the last time I just wanted to throw in the towel and go home in the middle of a trail. However after two straight days of just hiking in freezing cold muddy marshes, losing my shoes in the mud and at time knee deep swamp, I was ready to go home.  Read More

Daily pic: The long wet road

This picture was taken outside of Fulufjället in central Sweden. I believe this was on the third day of a five day hike. Anyway, I was pretty sick and tired of how wet this trail was. I of course should have been well accustomed to the wetness by the third day but my feet hadn’t been dry for more than five minutes when I came across this lovely section of the trail. Read More

Hygiene on the trail

I get this question a lot with regards to hygiene on the trail. I have seen and talked with a lot of heavy-miserables who don’t think about hygiene and after four days on the trail start getting bad ass blisters and general chapping. This of course is as pleasant as it sounds.

The ass blister problem gets exponentially worse the less breathable pants and clothing you have on. I have found a few solutions that work really well for me besides having light breathable clothing. Read More
