  3. Find Your Direction:
    • Turn the compass dial until the “N” on the dial aligns with the north needle (make sure your feet are pointed the direction you want to go).
    • Note the degree reading where the direction you want to travel is indicated on the compass dial.

Navigate Using Both

  1. Set Your Bearing:
    • Decide where you want to go and find the direction on the map. Use the compass to get the bearing (direction) to that point.
  2. Follow the Bearing:
    • Move in the direction of the bearing you set. Keep the traveling direction aligned with the compass needle as you walk.

    • Periodically stop and check both your map and compass to ensure you remain on course.

Getting Started with Ultralight Motorcycle Camping

The last couple of years I have been combining my love of hiking with my love for riding motorcycles (or snowmobiles for that matter). I find the combination of UL gear with a motorcycle is the perfect combination. If I know I will be doing a lot of hiking, than I will pack everything into a backpack and strap the backpack onto my motorcycle. If, however, I will be traveling long distance (through europe as example) than I use motorcycle saddlebags. I this article I will discuss some of the basics if you yourself are looking at combining these two great hobbies to maximize your enjoyment!

Motorcycle camping is a unique way to explore the great outdoors, combining the exhilaration of motorcycle touring with the adventure of camping. One of the appeals of motorcycle camping is the need to carefully choose and pack gear due to limited space, which naturally leads to a minimalist, ultralight approach. This article explores the benefits of keeping your gear light and compact, and provides suggestions for essential equipment such as tents, saddlebags, sleeping mats, and sleeping quilts.

The Mosko moto packs are great quality, but bad design in my opionon. Or atleast could be better design on the two side pockets. These are very small meaning you will find yourself having to stuff everything really hard to get them in.

Benefits of Ultralight Motorcycle Camping

  1. Enhanced Handling and Safety: Carrying less weight on your motorcycle improves its handling, making your ride more enjoyable and safer. A lighter load reduces wear and strain on the motorcycle, particularly when navigating steep or winding roads.

  3. Ease of Setup and Teardown: With ultralight gear, setting up and packing your campsite is quicker and less labor-intensive. This leaves more time for exploring or simply relaxing at your destination.
  4. Flexibility and Mobility: Reducing the volume of your gear allows you to organize and access your belongings more easily, enhancing your overall travel experience. Being nimble means you can adapt to changing conditions and make spontaneous decisions to changes in your itinerary.

Essential Ultralight Gear

Tents

When selecting a tent for ultralight motorcycle camping, prioritize weight, durability, and ease of setup. Here are a few options:

  • Bivouac Sacks (Bivy Sacks): These are compact, waterproof enclosures just big enough for a sleeping bag. They’re extremely lightweight and pack down very small, making them ideal for minimalist campers.
  • One-person Tents: These offer a balance between comfort and weight. Look for models made from modern lightweight materials like Dyneema, which provide excellent durability and weather resistance.
  • Hammock Tents: If your camping spots often include trees, a hammock tent can be a comfortable and compact option. They keep you off the ground, providing a good solution in wet or uneven terrain.

I prefer the Skalmo Mid 1 with solid Half-inner tent. Ultralight light, roomy and with the Camouflage, it’s easy to do proper stealth camping.

Saddlebags

Saddlebag choice is critical, as it dictates how you’ll carry and organize your gear. Consider these options:

  • Soft Saddlebags: Made from flexible materials, these are often lighter and can be easier to pack since their shape can adapt to the contents. Look for those with waterproof features to protect your gear from the elements.
  • Hard Saddlebags: These offer more protection and can be locked for security, but they are heavier. Opt for models that utilize lightweight materials like aluminum to maintain durability without excessive weight.
  • Modular Luggage Systems: Allow for expansion or contraction based on the amount of gear you carry. This flexibility can be useful for adjusting to different trip lengths or conditions.

For a pair of solid, roomy saddle bags I really like the 21brothers pockets. These are excellent size and form for 25L saddle bags (25L on each side, 50L total). Only downside is the inner pockets can’t be removed separately from the harness itself. This is however easily solved with a waterproof roll-top bag on inside.

Sleeping Mats

A good night’s sleep is essential, even when camping. An ultralight sleeping mat can provide comfort without taking up much space:

  • Inflatable Pads: These are compact when deflated and offer good insulation from the ground. Look for designs that are well-constructed to prevent leaks and offer high R-values for warmth.
  • Closed-cell Foam Pads: These are durable and inexpensive, with decent insulation. While they don’t pack down as small, they can be strapped to the outside of your luggage or motorcycle.

Sleeping Quilts

A quilt can be a versatile and weight-saving option over a traditional sleeping bag:

  • Down Quilts: These offer excellent warmth-to-weight ratios. Look for responsibly sourced down, with high fill power, to ensure maximum insulation and compressibility.
  • Synthetic Quilts: While a bit heavier than down, synthetic options perform better in wet conditions and can be a cost-effective alternative.
  • Convertible Quilts: These offer versatility, allowing them to be used as both a quilt and a bag, adapting to varying climates and personal preferences for sleeping arrangements.

Packing Strategies

Efficient packing is key for ultralight motorcycle camping. Distribute weight evenly to maintain bike balance, and place heavy items low and forward. Utilize compression bags to minimize volume and keep items like sleeping bags and clothes compact. Organize small essentials in easily accessible places, so they can be found quickly without unpacking larger items.

Who are you, and how would you describe yourself as a hiker?
I was born and raised in Piteå, with a great love for nature, especially the forest close to home. As a child, I spent a lot of time playing in the woods or accompanying my dad and grandfather on forestry work. I’ve always been intrigued by climbing mountains, but my interest in hiking developed during adulthood. Today, I’d describe myself as a “fast-slow” hiker; I like to walk at a brisk pace but also love taking long breaks to fully immerse myself in the nature around me.

What was your biggest challenge during the Gröna Bandet, and how did you handle it?
My biggest challenge during the Gröna Bandet was probably the weather on the day I hiked from Klimpfjäll to Raukaselet via Slipsiken. The wind was extremely strong, and rain lashed sideways across the mountains. I leaned heavily into the wind as I walked, and it was the first and only time during the hike that I felt at risk of getting hypothermic. My goal was to reach Slipsikstugan, a hut about nine kilometers from Klimpfjäll. When I finally got there, I was cold and soaked, but I was able to make a fire, warm up, dry off, and take a long lunch break while the storm raged outside. I had company from a few other hikers, and we talked about staying overnight. However, as the wind and rain began to subside, I decided to continue after some rest and made it safely off the mountain six kilometers from the hut.

Which part of the route was the most memorable, and why?
It’s incredibly hard to pick one specific section because I experienced and look back on the whole journey as a unified adventure. But if I had to choose, I’d say the first part of the Gröna Bandet, from Treriksröset to Abisko, was the most memorable. The weather was absolutely stunning, the scenery was breathtaking, and the infrastructure along that part of the Nordkalottleden was excellent. It was also great fun to share that section with my partner. Reaching Abisko was a significant milestone for me—it felt surreal that I had managed to hike there from the far north! That stretch set the tone for the journey and made continuing southward both possible and exciting.

How did you prepare physically and mentally for the hike?
I trained both cardio and strength during the winter and spring. The cross-country skiing season really helped improve my base fitness. I also went on a few shorter trips with my gear during spring to get used to carrying and handling it, as well as to evaluate if I wanted to make any changes before setting out. I also tried to walk more in my daily life instead of biking to places. Mentally, I thought a lot about how I’d handle being alone and deal with potential challenges along the way. These reflections were practically useful and also helped me show kindness to myself during the hike.

What gear was the most valuable for you, and what would you leave behind next time?
On chilly evenings, my Rab Xenon Jacket was incredibly valuable. Another standout item was my Kula Cloth—it worked perfectly and is a great tip for anyone peeing outdoors without needing to carry toilet paper. I also brought a CuloClean bidet, but I never ended up using it, so I’d leave that behind next time.

How did you manage food and water along the way?
I dried my own food for about half of the hike and shipped it to resupply points in Abisko, Ritsem, and Ammarnäs. For the rest of the hike, I bought food as I went, usually enough for three to five days at a time. This worked really well for me since I passed more small shops and stores the farther south I went. I drank water directly from streams between Treriksröset and Ammarnäs. South of Ammarnäs, I used a water filter, which I was very grateful to have on several occasions.

Were there moments when you considered quitting, and what made you keep going?
There wasn’t a single moment when I seriously considered quitting. However, my motivation wavered the day I left Hemavan heading south. I had just parted ways with two friends who had joined me from Ammarnäs to Hemavan, and those days had been so wonderful after hiking alone for a while. Saying goodbye was tough, and the weather forecast promised terrible conditions for the coming week. On top of that, I had a long day of road walking ahead of me. I started questioning what I was doing and why. What kept me going was primarily a sense of respect for myself and my dream of completing the Gröna Bandet.

How did this hike affect your view of nature and outdoor life?
My perspective on Sweden’s nature has broadened significantly after seeing the entire mountain range with my own eyes. It was fascinating to slowly experience how the high peaks of the north transitioned into the rolling open landscapes farther south. Returning to my regular life in a mid-sized city, with all its noise, light, and constant stimuli, was surprisingly challenging after having nature as my everyday environment for 55 days. Strangely, I feel more distant from nature now than I did before hiking the Gröna Bandet. Regarding outdoor life, the hike made me deeply grateful for the infrastructure, volunteers, and dedicated people who make Sweden’s rich outdoor culture possible.

What do you wish you had known before starting the Gröna Bandet that would have made the journey easier?
I wish I had known how long my daily hiking distances would be. That knowledge would have allowed me to relax a bit more at times since I actually had much more time than I initially thought to reach Grövelsjön.

How did the weather shape your experience, and how did you prepare for different conditions?
The weather influenced my experience every single day! Sunny days often felt lighter and more energizing. I would often take breaks and enjoy the surroundings, and everything seemed to go smoothly without much effort. Of course, sunny weather required extra care to avoid sunburn, so sunglasses, a cap, and SPF 50 sunscreen were my best friends. Rainy days required more mental grit and planning to get through but had their charm—for example, choosing to sleep indoors and warm up by a fire after a wet day. Before the hike, I prepared in several ways. I brought a wind jacket, rain jacket, rain pants, and waterproof socks. My sleeping bag and a change of clothes were stored in a sturdier waterproof bag, along with my electronics. The rest of my gear was packed in other dry bags, and I used a liner bag inside my backpack instead of a rain cover. During the hike, I consumed weather reports like never before!

What advice would you give to someone considering hiking the Gröna Bandet?
You can find many great tips about the Gröna Bandet from other hikers online—this was invaluable for me during the planning stage! But don’t overthink it or worry if you haven’t spent ages preparing—adventure is out there waiting for you, and you’ll figure out a lot along the way!

Ultralight and comfortable: A no bullsh*t guide to ultralight hiking – Updated for 2024

I finally found the original manuscript of the book I wrote in 2015 and released it on Amazon. My original goal was to do yearly book updates, but I found it wasn’t really necessary. So I never did; with that, the manuscript got lost in the endless depths of my hard drive. Well, I did the unimaginable and searched in my Google Docs for it, and voila, here we are.

After finding the manuscript, I reviewed the original Amazon reviews. There were very few complaints about the book, but the complaints that did come were about grammar and spelling; a few people thought it needed more vinegar. In any case, I updated the book with a few more chapters, rewrote big portions of the book for clarity, and even took Ultralight Hiking into the future with the use of an AI assistant bot; that really doesn’t help at all.

HMG Unbound review

HMG Unbound review

  • Great design
  • Water tight
  • Lots of pockets
  • Frame and comfortable hip belt

On first look the unbound looks like every other UL pack released in the last couple of years. And in some ways it is a copy of smaller cottage bag forms. A way for HMG to stay relevant in a fast changing market. HMG have always made great, robust, ultralight backpacks. I bought my first HMG pack in 2010 – The Windrider 4400 70L white backpack. The Windrider has been the standard for over a decade and often copied design. Today however, the Windrider feels its age. It’s a great pack, and my first Windrider is still the backpack I use the most. I would also say that the Windrider or similar packs like the Southwest, junction and porter are still the packs I recommend most. Their versatility for different uses, their robustness, comfort and useability just makes them damn good multipurpose backpacks that most people will never regret. With that said, The overall market has clearly been trending towards smaller, lighter “long distance” ultralight packs.

Standard features of the new breed: Bottom pocket, large front pocket, large side pockets, with/without hipbelt and frame, and shoulder strap pockets (which the unbound doesn’t have). In other words, the minimalistic designs of the early UL movement have been getting replaced and outdone by highly technical, complex bags with one specific goal: To make it through a long hike with minimal fuss and maximal comfort. Classic minimal, multifunction packs that would last a lifetime, i e the Windrider, just weren’t the sexy new kid on the block anymore. They look and feel their age. A near 20 year design with minimal updates. I think the current Hyperlite mountain gear Windrider could be summed up as Version 1.5. 

Older, OG UL Hikers use and still love the classic multipurpose design of the Windriders. But the new hipster class hikers, the ones giving themselves trail names, (For reference mine is “Just Ken”) using pronouns in their bios,  and bringing more electronics than a Best buy, needed something more. they needed sexy! This is where the unbound comes in. Sexy as hell, lots of pockets and do dads, even the new standard bottom pocket. Hyperlite didn’t just copy UL packs from the smaller, sexier, new brands, they made the new segment their own. The unbound is so good, that it looks like all the packs the Unbound is inspired by, are in fact the inspired. The unbound is simply put, one of the best designed UL long distance packs on the market. 

Light, at just 879g for white 55L or 975g for black, it’s not the lightest 55 Liter pack, but it certainly compares nicely in the segment. And like all Hyperlite mountain gear backpacks, the extra weight is worth it in the form of robustness and comfort. Unlike most other packs, the unbound sews its webbing on the outside of the pack, which allows for all the extra pockets, features and doodads, while still allowing for the bag to be taped and sealed. (Most backpacks use a flat felled seam) The outside webbing also allows for a simple daisy chain to be sewn into the seam itself. Simple, effective. The large front pocket is divided into two sections, a large main pocket, and a smaller “Kangaroo” pocket. Again, simple and effective. The bottom pocket does what it’s supposed to and for me atleast: it’s the comfort of the Unbound that separates it from the rest of the packs in this genre. This pack feels great, even with heavier loads.

Compared to something like the Zpacks Arc-blast – which to me has always been the standard – pen-ultimate ultralight 55L backpack. I would say the Unbound looks better IMO, and with heavier loads a more comfortable backpack. But I would give overall comfort for lighter loads to the Arc-blast as well as better back ventilation. Though the arc-blast starts to break down with heavier, or awkward loads as the frame doesn’t do much. There are of course a multitude of lightweight backpacks that I can compare the Unbound to, but I will keep this review simple and the comparison to the Arc-blast as the arc-blast is a well known, very light 55 Liter pack that most people will know how they look and feel at this point.

Back to the Unbound, Sweaty back syndrome is still a thing with this pack, but let’s be honest, if you’re calling yourself “elf on the trail” with Zeek, Zerk pronouns, sweaty back is the least of your problems. With that said, sweaty backs is like condensation in a tent. It’s there, no matter what you do, it can’t be avoided but can be mitigated. The Unbound through and through looks and feels like an HMG pack. The quality is sharp, the design near perfect. function and use superb. It’s everything you want in a 55 liter long distance backpack, with nothing you don’t. So it’s not made in a little basement in Maine. It’s Not made in China either. And judging by how massive certain brands have become in the UL market, brands that very specifically make their original or copied designs in Asia. It’s obvious the market could care less where the products are made, for reference, HMG built factories in Mexico, where the unbound is produced.

Biggest complaints about the Unbound? No shoulder strap pockets and I think the hip-belt pockets are a bit on the small side. Granted, a lot of the Unbounds competitors don’t bother with hip-belt pockets, but still, they could be bigger. Also, as it’s a pack designed for a very specific purpose, it’s not a pack that I would personally have as my goto pack. I need a bigger pack that has a bit more flexibility in it’s useage. Hence, why the 70L Windrider is my preferred one pack to rule them all.

Hyperlite mountain gear is a company known for making robust, if not basic lightweight equipment. But premium in its use and functionality. There is nothing basic about the unbound packs. They are high quality, modern ultralight backpacks with a very specific market in mind: The gear nerd who likes to walk long distances with weekly resupplies, live in a tent for six months and call themselves “Trail fart!

Tell us about yourself, who are you?

-I’m Gina, a 32-year-old Swedish adrenaline junkie with a lifelong passion for pushing boundaries. My journey began amidst the thundering hooves of horses, but it was at 19 when I traded the stables for the sunny shores of Sydney, immersing myself in the world of thoroughbred horse racing. Over eight exhilarating years, my love for the outdoors blossomed, leading me to discover the thrill of trail running and embark on a 2700 km cycling odyssey along Australia’s rugged east coast.

In 2018, I embarked on an adventure that would forever alter the course of my life. Skiing solo from Nordkapp to Jäckvik in Sweden, a grueling journey spanning 60 days and roughly 1000 km, I found myself thrust into a world of icy challenges and breathtaking vistas. Before that fateful expedition, I had never strapped on a pair of skis, slept in a winter tent, or ventured north of Stockholm. Since then, I’ve traded the bustling streets of Sydney for the tranquility of Honningsvåg, Finnmark, a quaint village nestled just 30 km south of Nordkapp.

From traversing the length of Norway to braving the frigid waters of Lake Baikal alone in the heart of winter, covering 700 km in a bone-chilling 15 days, my thirst for adventure knows no bounds.

You have a challenge ahead of you, tell us about it?

Fast forward to today, and I find myself on the precipice of my most audacious adventure yet: a solo and unsupported expedition to the South Pole. My mission? To reclaim the female speed record by traversing the icy expanse of Antarctica, a daunting 1130 km journey across the planet’s most inhospitable continent.

Facing uphill battles every step of the way, the South Pole sits at a dizzying altitude of 2835 meters, with temperatures plummeting to a bone-chilling -35°C, and winds whipping up to a staggering -70°C. With a daily caloric intake ranging between 4500 to 6100 calories, I’ll burn through an astonishing 7000 to 10,000 calories each day. Antarctica offers little respite for the weary traveler – it’s a stark white desert devoid of landmarks, where the only guide is the compass needle and the only scenery a vast expanse of snow and sky.

So, what drives me to undertake such an extraordinary challenge? It’s the thrill of testing my limits, the satisfaction of pushing past what’s considered impossible. I want to inspire others to chase their dreams, to step outside the confines of the ordinary and embrace the unknown.

How are you preparing?

Preparation is key. Alongside rigorous training regimens encompassing strength training, endurance sessions on the skierg, skiing, and trail running, I’ve devoted countless hours to securing partnerships to finance the expedition. With the journey to Antarctica alone costing approximately US $85,000, every detail must be meticulously planned. From obtaining permits for a solo expedition to Antarctica to ensuring I have the requisite experience, the road to the South Pole is paved with challenges, but I’m ready to tackle them head-on.

Would you like to share details about your equipment, packing lists, etc.? Any items you consider particularly important?

With a speed record in my sights, every gram counts. While a typical sled load weighs around 100 kg, my goal is to pare it down to a lean 60 kg, including provisions for the entire journey. Opting for Nnn bindings over traditional BC to save weight, my gear lineup includes shell clothing, a face mask for protection against the biting cold, a satellite phone, and an inreach for communication with the outside world. Every piece of equipment is carefully selected for its lightweight design and durability, with products from Nitecore leading the charge.

Given Antarctica’s arid conditions, down insulation is a must for its lightweight warmth, while a power bank and solar panel provide a lifeline of energy under the midnight sun, ensuring I stay powered up throughout the expedition.

Some tips you want to give to our readers on how to handle the cold if it’s really chilly?

Sure- here are some tips on how to handle the cold: Avoid sweating by ensuring proper ventilation and adapting accordingly. One can quickly become overheated, especially when pulling a sled. Wearing netting against the body to wick moisture away from the skin is also a very helpful tip. In the tent, having a Nalgene bottle with hot water is very useful to have in the sleeping bag to warm up a bit or to warm hands while cooking. However, it’s important to be mindful not to let water leak into the sleeping bag. Remember that clothes should not be too tight-fitting, and the same goes for ski boots. If they’re too tight, it will be cold, so you often need to go up one or two sizes, the same applies to outerwear.

Jemtlander Pullpac 8L – The incredible pulk

The Jemtlander PullPac is an ultralight pulka for those who normally carry a pack on their back and who also want to be able to pull their rucksack (or bag) behind them when the conditions are suitable. The design of the chassis is adapted to normal-width backpacks in the 60-90 liter range that do not have overly wide side pockets. In steep and/or difficult terrain, it is a great advantage to be able to take the rucksack including the sled on the back.

A complete Jemtlander Pullpac 8L consists of a sled chassis with 3 pack straps, a pull belt and a complete pull line with carabiners and built-in suspension. (NOTE! Backpack or bag not included in Pullpac!)

Our thoughts:

Jörgen Johansson, wrote many years ago about a lightweight Pulka he made for an ultralight trek through Sarek nation park, he called that converted pulka “the Ultimate Rulk”. Great story of his trek and how he used the pulk. Basically long 5000 word story condensed to a few lines here: He sawed off the back of a traditional orange pulk and strapped it to his backpack so that he could alternate from having the backpack on which is needed through certain areas where there is no trail. To being able to pull it on his pulk without having to change any configuration on the sled itself. So ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the new, improved and excellent “incredible Rulk”. 

What can I say about this Pulk? It is the perfect winter UL pulk. As the Incredible rulk, you strap this onto your pack and you then can use your pulk as both a sled and protection on your pack in backpack mode. Everything you need is included, no trying to pussle together anything to get the Pullpak to work. I’ve tried it on multiple packs without issue. From a simple 55 liter UL backpack to a 100L Ymer from Klättermusen. It’s perfection in it’s simplicity.

Weight:

In totalt with everything you need: 1,20 kilos

So light I could almost see myself trying this on a summer hike when I need more gear with me. Might be worth trying to pull it behind me on open mountain ranges in the summer. Not saying it would work, but I am certainly curious. 

In this picture here, this is how it comes packed. Small and light.

Included: 

Sled that form to just about any backpack for a nice tight fit. All the straps needed to form it and strap it to your pack and all the ropes and hipbelt needed to pull it behind you. 

Conclusion:

There are a lot of sleds out there for winter hiking, but most of them all have the same negatives: They become a real pain in the ass when there is no trail. Heavy, cumbersome and large, a traditional winter backpacking sled can be downright dangerous when their is no trail. This is where the PullPac comes into play – at just 800 grams for the led itself, it allows for quick conversion from sled to backpack in those un-taimed trails. Obviously there are a few drawbacks to having such a pulk solution, but the main one being that because you are limited to the size of your pack, and UL kit is needed for best results. With a traditional sled you can pack everything including all the additional comforts you might want with you. However, with that said, you can fit a 100 liter pack on this thing, so, not sure how much of a limiting factor that is. 

All in all, I really like the PullPak, and will be a Pulk that I use for all my winter hikes where I won’t be on a trail. Where there is a trail, than I think my massive pulk with dogs and/or snowmobile pulling is a better solution. Jokes aside, the Pullpak is a fantastic addition to the UL hikers kit and you won’t be dissapointed.

Minus:

  • Not fun going downhill. No stabilizer means the Pullpac eats your heels. So best practice to use as backpack going downhill

Andra packar det man har och det som får plats i ryggsäcken, skippar mat depåerna och bara ger sig ut, utan att tänka så mycket på vad grejerna väger. Samuel Leaben Rosén har varken en packlista, eller något lättviktstält att stoltsera med. Under sina 5 turer genom den Skandinaviska fjällkedjan har han bara vägt sin ryggsäck en gång och då vägde den ca 30 kg, utan mat, dvs 15-20 kg mer än många andra som vi har intervjuat och vandrat samma sträcka. Med facit i hand så är denna story kanske inget som hör hemma på varken Backpackinglight.se eller Ultralight and Comfortable eller någon annan lättviktsblogg för den delen. Men när jag intervjuade Samuel så slog det mig att vi alla är olika. En del har varken tid, ekonomin eller intresset att nörda ned sig för att sen kitta upp sig med de lättaste prylarna. Om jag går till mig själv så var det först när jag fick testa lättare utrustning som jag förstod det stora värdet i det och hur mycket det faktiskt maximerade min totala vandringsupplevelse. Jag hade inga problem att bära på 30 kg men det tog på och jag var ofta helt tömd på energi när jag kom fram till lägerplatsen efter ett pars mil vandring. Men att göra det i 130 mil, kräver yx-pannben och en vilja utöver det vanliga, något som jag inte skulle råda någon att göra. I slutet på denna artikel kommer jag försöka förklara fördelarna men att minska ned sin bärvikt och vad som händer när man bantar från 30kg till 15 kg, inte bara att du rör dig smidigare utan faktiskt försöka påvisa den “ränta på ränta” effekt som faktiskt uppstår. Fram tills dess, här är Magnus egna story:

Kul att du vill vara med, berätta för läsarna, Vem är 5-bandsmannen Samuel Leaben Rosen?

-Tänker på det ibland och jag vet inte riktigt. En småcharmig karlslok i 40-årsåldern utan högt flygande planer eller stora ambitioner, kanske. Nåt sånt hade jag förmodligen skrivit på en eventuell tinder profil. -Om någon tycker jag är mer, mindre eller något annat, måhända att de har rätt. Jag varken vet eller bryr mig. 5-Bands mannen. Det är förmodligen aldrig någon som kallat mig det, inte ens jag själv. 5-sekunders mannen har jag väl hört några gånger, det är förvisso en helt annan historia. Det som drivit mig att trampa och skida genom vår svenska fjällvärd är mestadels slumpen. Att jag dessutom för ungefär 5 år sedan inte har ett heltidsarbete utan drängar runt som en kommunal timvikarie har gett mig både tid och frihet att göra lite vad jag vill.

Hellre stå på en sten och spela ball än att sitta på den och böla.

Berätta om dina turer?

-Första gången skedde genom att en god kamrat föreslog att vi skulle köra Gröna bandet ihop. Jag tänkte väl då: -Visst, varför inte! Att min kamrat sedan fick förhinder att hänga med, det där med att livet kommer emellan, stoppade inte mig. Som jag skrev innan så har inte jag riktigt samma liv, åtaganden eller ansvar. Jag var fortfarande inställd på att dra iväg och hade sett till att inte knyta upp mig, lova bort mig eller planerat in något annat. Så efter att kräva skjuts till Grövelsjön av tidigare nämnd kamrat så gav jag mig iväg.

-Andra gången hade min kamrat lyckats pussla och planera bättre i sitt ansvarsfulla och upptagna leverne att han kunde hänga med. Vi hade ju sagt att vi skulle göra detta tillsammans och det var något både han och jag ville göra. Så vi fick vårat äventyr, ett år försenat men tillsammans.


-Tredje gången och första vita. Det går ju att göra det på skidor också, undra om jag klarar av det? Det går säkert att fundera över och komma fram till ett realistiskt svar. Eller, så kör jag bara och ser om det går, och det gjorde det!

-Fjärde gången och andra skidturen. Två gröna, två vita. Det låter bra, det är viktigt med balans.

-Femte gången och tredje gröna. Via fejjangruppen eller hemsidan blev jag varse att det introducerades en special patch för de som gjort det fem gånger. Jag kunde inte låta bli att tänka: Den patchen vill jag ha, och så blev det också.

Ett par trötta skidfötter. Detta var dagen innan jag besökte Alko i Kilpisjärvi. Något senare infann sig ett vansinne av smärta kryddat med brännvin. Detta ledde till att jag drog min mora och knivade upp mina pjäxor för att få lite tåutrymme. Fick fixa dem med en uppskuren drybag på kvällen för att slippa få in snö i dem, rätt val.

Vad är det som driver dig till alla dessa långturer?

-Det var ju såklart någonting som fick mig att fastna för slitiga långturer under och efter den där första vandringen. Grunden i utmaningen är något som är väldigt tilltalande för mig i sin enkelhet. Ta dig därifrån till dit och gör det för egen maskin. -Fan så skönt. Det är givetvis jobbigt, jävligt och jävligt jobbig! Men att varje dag veta exakt vad som ska göras. Det ska gås eller glidas, beroende på årstid. Denna ljuva enkelhet! Att det dessutom innebär att jag får vara ute och uppleva naturen och allt hon har att bjuda på. Jag upplever henne som mer sträng än öm. Om någon undrar.

Berätta om dina Bandet minnen?

-Finns några att välja på. De som har berört mig mest är möten med främlingar som hjälper en, så häng med och minns dem med mig:

Första Gröna Bandet turen.

-Oerfaren och småvilsen i Jämtlands-vischan och det smyger sig upp någon gammal Toyotahistoria (kan ha fel här, är inte så bra på bilar) längst vägen. I den sitter en vithårig farbror och undrar om jag ska förbi bystugan. Jag saknade vetskap om både bystuga och farbror, så jag svarade väl något i stil med: Ehh,… Ok! -Det var så jag träffade Stig för första gången. Ett väldigt bra möte och ett minne jag ska vårda lika ömt som en skål fylld till bredden med nymjölkad mjölk.

Under Gröna Bandet nr 2 så finns det en som jag ibland tänker på.

-En man vi träffade i Valsjöbyns lokala bodega. Vi var därinne för att handla något vi behövde men mestadels unn vi ville ha. Vi frågar expediten om det måhända går att köpa piprensare, vilket tyvärr inte gick. Efter några minuters scrollande i butikens hyllor så dyker mannen upp. Med sig har han en påse piprensare och erbjuder oss dem. Utan att be om något i ersättning. Den här mannen har alltså överhört vår förfrågan, åkt hem för att hämta piprensarna och sedan tillbaka för att skänka dem till oss. Bara för att vara snäll. Vackrare än alla utsikter sammanslagna.

Första skidturen.

Ett ganska kargt välkomnande till Jämtland denna gång. Strax efter Helags så stormar det på ordentligt vilket leder till en bortblåst skida. Så efter en slitig fjälltur till fots in i Vålådalen. Skidlös, skitsur och ledsen stannar jag kvar över natten efter att ha pratat med tjejen som kan ha varit sportchef. På förmiddagen så har sportchefen blivit påverkad av mitt slitna anlete och ledsna hundögon. Hon har funnit i sig hjärta, viljan att hjälpa mig fortsätta på mitt äventyr genom att iordningställa en hyrskida åt mig. Så rart så jag blir nästan tårögd.

Senare samma skidtur kom jag till Raukasjö och hade då pulktrubbel istället. Återigen med detta slitna anlete och ledsna hundögon fick jag hjälp av Tommy att ordna pulkans underrede. Väldigt snäll man, gubbsträng men snäll.

Vid en finländsk autiotupa, fast i Finland. Jävla Covid.

Andra skidturen.

En tur som gick bra, bortsett från allt covid-kaos som världen drogs med. Jag träffade Kent i Rötviken. Jag gillar Rötviken för att det heter just Rötviken, men vem gör inte det? Jag gillar Kent för att han är skön. En klassisk urstockholmare, kört taxi och nu sadlat om till att arrendera camping.

Den sista färden. Eller den senaste i alla fall.

-Efter att ha traskat genom Tärnaby, denna gång på väg söderut. Här har jag slängt upp tältet på någon form av vändplats avsedd för skogsmaskiner, längst med en grusväg, då en kvinnlig bilist plötsligt stannar till och undrar om jag är ute och “grönabandar”, vilket jag var. Efter några tips om tältplatser och allmänna trevligheter undrar damen om jag behöver något. Jag tänker, varför inte, jag kan väl lika väl fråga. Du har ingen sprit kanske? -Undrar jag. Nej tyvärr, svarar hon. Men hon har knappt hunnit avsluta svaret innan hon utbrister: -Nej, vänta! Efter ett kort rotande i bilen har hon lyckats trolla fram en flaska Baileys som hon glatt avvarar. En trevlig och oväntad present!

Någon halvkilometer från Sälkastugan kunde jag sitta vid tältet och glo på andra fjällfräsare. Lite ensamhetens sällskap. Det sällskap jag gillar.

Hur ser din packning ut och hur förbereder du dig inför en långtur?

-Jag är ganska oplanerad vad gällande packning, vilket leder till att jag ofta bär en ganska tung ryggsäck. Har en snigelmentalitet, är tung och långsam då jag bär hela huset på ryggen. Man måste ju vara redo för vad som kommer! Det är dessutom ofta mat och onyttigheter som väger mest och det kan jag alltid äta upp om jag vill bära lättare. Utöver allt som är nödvändigt. Mat, tält, sovsäck, liggunderlag, kök, ombyten etc. så tycker jag det är väldigt skönt att ha med lurar till telefonen så jag kan lyssna på musik ibland. Någon typ av rast sko är något som jag gillar att ha med, är det inte vinter och snö så använder jag en badsko från Lidl och är det skidåkning så har jag en bivy boot.

-En pissflaska är heller inte så dumt, särskilt på vintern. Finns säkert många som håller med mig och kan känna igen sig. De där gångerna vi legat i våra tält, pissnödiga, sura och våndats av en fruktansvärt stark ovilja att ge oss ut i rugget utanför den skyddande tältduken. En pissflaska löser de problemen, i alla fall för den penisbärande delen av befolkningen. Vet inte om det finns andra lösningar.

En uppgiven en efter 500 m uppför Jakobshöjden. Vad i helvete har jag gett mig in på? Om jag inte missminner mig, var det något åt det hållet jag tänkte.

-Efter att ha bestämt att jag ska iväg någonstans så går jag några dagar och tänker mig att jag är ute. Då är det lätt för mig att visualisera vad jag vill ha med mig. Kommer jag på någonting utöver grunderna så lägger jag det på minnet, sen kvällen innan jag ska dra så slänger jag ihop det jag tänkt mig.

-Jag har bara vägt min packning en gång. För att jag vet att den alltid kommer vara så onödigt tung, så jag vill inte veta. Lite som när en drar sig för att öppna en faktura som kommer vara smärtsamt för plånboken.

Den gången jag vägde den var på sista bandetturen, när jag kom ner till Abisko. Så från Kilpisjärvi till Abisko, vilket tog en dryg vecka. Då vägde den 28kg. Så några kilon över 30 gissar jag att den väger vid start.

Jag skickade ut depåer under den första Vita Bandet turen. De andra gångerna har jag handlat längst vägen. Då har det blivit vid Åre, Gäddede, Klimpfjäll, Valsjöbyn, Tärnaby, Hemavan, Ammarnäs, Jäkkvik och Abisko. Beroende på vilken väg jag tog och om jag behövde fylla på. Har föredragit detta eftersom jag då med säkerhet vet att inget kommer försvinna med posten.

Nyshoppat unn från Klimpfjäll avnjuts i tralligt väder och gott sällskap.

Utöver det har det inte funnits minsta skam att rota igenom efterlämningar i de fjällstugor som besökts. Eller att unna sig en frukostbuffé om den möjligheten funnits.

Några nya turer inplanerade?

-Absolut. Jag kommer dra iväg på något mer av en rekreations tur i juli/augusti. Har inte bestämt riktigt var, men blir till fjälls i alla fall. Och tänkte då ta med min packning till er på Backpackinglight.se så får ni kitta upp mig med lättare prylar, så ska jag skriva sen om skillnaden.

Mina förberedelser inför Pacific Crest Trail- Vi träffar David Stillman

När kylan får klockorna att stanna, när solens strålar inte längre når upp över talltopparna. Tidpunkten på året då hundratals traktorförare varje morgon går upp för att hålla Norrlands tusentals mil vägar körbara. Vi pratar om Januari 2022, och livet liksom längtar efter ljuspunkter. Ken har redan gjort något åt saken och tagit första bästa flyg till Gran Canaria för att vandra, medan jag sitter ensam på Backpackinglights kundtjänst och drömmer om kommande äventyr efter att ha intervjuat Peter Bergström. Peter hade sommaren -21 vandrat Gröna bandet fram och tillbaka, en sk. Jojo vandring. Jojo, tänker jag, det skulle man ha gjort, när telefonen plötsligt ringer…

Pacific Crest Trail

En man som presenterar sig som David Stillman ringer och berättar att han skulle behöva hjälp med utrustning. Pacific Crest Trail väntade och jag fick uppdrag att optimera hans utrustning inför den kommande vandringen. Precis vad jag behövde!

Pacific Crest trail (PCT) är en 426 mil lång vandringsled som löper mellan Mexikanska gränsen i söder, till Canada i norr. genom öken, bergskedjor, strömmande älvar, höga höjder, snö, is och allt däremellan. David vandrade en del av PCT nu i somras och jag fick nu under hösten möjligheten att ställa några frågor om äventyret.

Hur förbereder man sig för PCT?

-Det finns gånger man kan chansa lite och det skulle fungera ändå, men att förbereda sig för en långvandring i vildmarken är inte en sådan gång, säger David och fortsätter. Just Pacific Crest Trail eller ”PCT” som den kort heter, är en extra lång långvandring, vilket gör den än mindre lämplig för chansningar. Här är man ”on Your own, säger David.

-Vid något tillfälle tänkte jag att det kan väl inte krävas så mycket annan utrustning än den jag redan har d.v.s. en klassisk svensk setup med Lundhagskängor och Fjällräven ryggsäck men efter en del research så landar man ändå i att försöka minimera vikten när det blir långt. Det blir i slutändan likväl än avvägning av hög komfort i själva vandringen dvs låg vikt eller hög komfort i nattlägret dvs hög vikt och det är väldigt individuellt vart den gränsen går. 

Efter en del avvägningar med arbetsgivare och familj blev startdatumet den 13:e juni. -Vid den tidpunkten startar man inte vid mexikanska gränsen, det blir helt enkelt för varmt för en blek nordbo som jag, tillägger David. -Jag valde därför att starta i Walkers pass, dvs i höjd med Ridgecrest.

-Tidpunkten gav mig dessbättre lite mer tid för att finslipa på planering och inköp av utrustning samt komma i bra form. Här var gänget på Backpackinglight.se i Umeå till stor hjälp. Vi bollade olika alternativ och landade i ett par avgörande vitala utrustningar som fungerade bra.

Berätta om din utrustning, vilka prylar var du mer eller mindre nöjd med?

-Valet på ryggsäck blev en Gossamer 60L. När jag fick hem den såg den väldigt liten ut och det såg helt omöjligt ut att få ner dom saker som jag hade på listan men dom väl tilltagna meshfickorna gjorde ett bra jobb och efter ett tag får man in en bra packningsrutin. T.o.m. den stora björnburken som var obligatorisk i norra Kalifornien gick att få in under locket…men det var tajt.

Ett annat bra val var vandringsskorna, för kängor går bort, menar David. – De är för tunga och torkar väldigt långsamt efter ett vad. -Så det är s.k. trail runners som gäller. Mitt val föll på Altra’s Lone Peak. För oss med bred tåbas är de helt underbara.  Gott om utrymme att vicka på tårna och skönt när man går i branta nedförsbackar. Otroligt lätta dessutom. En nackdel om man väger över snittet kan vara att man kan ”gå igenom” när man går på kantiga, spetsiga stenpartier.

-Med en ny rygga och nya skor så kunde den viktiga förberedelsen på allvar starta. Vid varje tillfälle åkte rygga och skor med och på helgerna så var det alltid ett längre pass inplanerat. Först med nätta 6–7 kg i ryggan och senare i schemat med ca 15 kg. Det kan faktiskt vara svårt att hitta tunga små saker som går ner i en ryggsäck så man tar vad man har. I mitt fall kom diverse utrustning från garaget väl tillhanda såsom skruvdragare, batterier och tänger.

David fortsätter: -Mitt Triangia kök var heller aldrig aktuellt och istället blev det en investering i en Soto Windmaster med inbyggd tändare samt en titanpanna Toaks 900 ml. Fungerade fantastiskt bra!

-En sak som skiljer sig från en svenska vandring är vattenkvaliteten och vattentillgången så möjlighet att filtrera vattnet är ett måste. Ha med dig ett vattenfilter. Sawyer squeeze gjorde jobbet för mig.

Istället för att bära på vatten så tog David med sig en Cnoc Vattenbehållare samt vattenfilter.

En av de tyngre investeringarna rent ekonomiskt som David gjorde var ett nytt tält. -Zpacks har genomgående väl genomtänkta, lätta och stryktålig utrustning att erbjuda. Själva tältvalet gick till Altaplex. Nu snackar vi om ett tält under ett halvt kilo!  Det är ett en persons tält men man får in mycket av utrustningen om man är normalstor. Det kändes aldrig klaustrofobiskt, tillägger David.

På listan av inköp som David ångrar finns Zpacks belt pouch och wallet: – Jag hade front pouch’en i midjebältet men det satt aldrig riktigt bra och jag var nära att glömma den flera gånger efter raster.

-En annan detalj som aldrig kom till användning, var gaiters. Visst kom det in nått gruskorn nu och då men det funkade bra utan och funkar det utan, så finns det helt enkelt ingen anledning att släpa på dom. 

-I öknen så varierar temperaturerna kraftigt mellan dag och natt. Det är även blåsigt många dagar och då är en liten smidig regnjacka en bra detalj även fast risken för regn i princip är minimal i den här delen av PCT. OMM’s Halo Smock är ultralätt och kom väl till användning.

-När väl äventyret startade kände jag mig trygg med min utrustning och fysik men det är också lite beroende hur man är lagd när det gäller förberedelser och tillgänglig budget. Visst skulle man rent teoretiskt kunna gå med skandinavisk uppsättning men det är något jag inte skulle rekommendera. Men faktum är att det skulle vara väldigt kreddigt och det skulle dra till sig en mängd frågor och intresse.

-Väl ute i vildmarken är det mycket det mentala och inställning som avgör ändå, förutom förberedelserna. Under en längre vandring så kommer det dippar, så är det. I mitt fall slog höjdsjukan till. Först lite diskret men sen mer allvarligt och i dessa miljöer är det en sån typ av chansning man inte vill laborera med för mycket. Efter inrådan från läkare så hoppade jag av vid Toloume Meadows. Det dog en ung holländska i maj förra året under sin PCT vandring, just pga höjdsjuka och jag ville inte hamna i en situation där jag tog dumma beslut och äventyrade min hälsa ännu mer.

-I slutändan blev det ett fantastiskt äventyr med massor av nya intryck. Det är ett härligt gäng där ute och tillsammans med de underbara vyerna så är det helt oslagbart häftigt.
