MYOG Ultralight tripod for backpacking photography

The title says it all! Out of sheer desperation I decided to try and make my own ultralight tripod for backpacking and the results turned out pretty damn good if I must say so myself. I made a quick video from start to finish.

Also keep in mind there are other companies that are producing similar tripod designs and it was actually Trailpix that gave me the idea for doing this myself. What I really liked about this design is that I still have a functional tripod even if I want to use my trekking poles for something other than a tripod.

Total weight:
Tripod 45 grams
Aluminium Tent pole 48grams

Total: 93 grams / 3.2 ounces

Tools you need:
Drill and drill bit – to drill holes in your trekking poles
Pliers – to cut off rubber feet

Needed for tripod:
Trekking poles
extra tent pole lying around – I use the Gossamer Gear Q-twinn tent pole. Though all makers have short tent poles you can buy
Flexible metal tripod. Mine is from Hamas and is called the mini Flexi. Cost 50sek at media markt here in Sweden. Best buy has similar variations of this.. Little and light

How to:

1. Cut off rubber feet on flexi tripod
2. Drill holes smaller than Tripod feet into walking stick handles
3. Insert tripod into walking sticks and extra tent pole
4. Attach camera to tripod
5. Take pictures
